Elephant trekking is unethical

I just found out the other night that elephant trekking is highly unethical.

Elephants need to eat 15-18 hours a day. Taking weight on their backs damages their bodies, they can carry someone on the back of the neck but not on the back. These trekking elephants work 10 hours a day hauling people around on thier backs. It is very bad for them.

If you want to support elephants, go visit an elephant camp.

    Agreed.

And, unfortunately, many of the camps are unethical as well.

I went to Elephant Nature Park yesterday, and had a great time, with no abuse to the elephants -- maybe a little to the mahouts ;)

I put some pics up at www.flickr.com/photos/igz...0058370283/ and more info about the park can be found at www.elephantnaturepark.org/

    cheers,

Riding an elephant might be unethical in some or even a lot of ways but the alternatives are, most of the time, far less ethical.

Elephants are very expensive creatures to own and once one of them has been bonded with a human it trusts they stay together for life. So unfortunately you cannot just let them go life in the wild. For most elephants in Thai they used to be used in the logging industry but they were recently replaced with machines so the only way for them and their owners to make ends meet feeding these magnificent creatures is it take advantage of tourism. A lot of these places take great care of their elephant partners while letting tourists ride their backs and neck. Go up to Pai and check out some of the small home run rides. They're awesome and the Elephants look super happy.

If you want to help support these creatures but you feel riding them is unethical then go and only feed and pet them but still pay the owner for a ride because they and their Elephant need it.

i was honored to ride an elephant twice when i was in thailand.

the first time was in a tourist elephant camp about an hour north of chiang mai. the place was beautiful, the animals were apparently very happy -- they "worked" giving rides (for the big ones) and doing stuff like playing soccer and painting stuff (the smaller ones) for a few hours in the mid-day, then the park closed and they had free range roaming space.

i honestly cannot imagine what could be happening behind the scenes to make people protest. they were well-fed, given lots of attention, and had their social systems intact.

then i rode once up in pai at one of the family places. she was a big old elephant and was pretty hilarious, since she just did what she wanted, really.. at one point, she turned off the steep and narrow path to head directly downhill toward the creek for a patch of bamboo... we were hanging there until she had her fill. she was the same age as me, it was pretty cool.

that family supported itself with their elephant, and though i suspect she did more heavy work on occasion than many elephants now, it seemed like a good scenario, or at least as good as possible.

from what i've seen, the biggest problem is elephants who are in the city and used to lure tourists. the traffic, the pollution, the cement streets, the weird energy, these cannot be good for such a powerful and noble animal as an elephant. that makes me sad.
