Does anyone have advice about traveling through the Andaman Coast? Unfortunately, I will only be there for a few days. I'm interested in Krabi, including Ko Lanta and Ko Pi Pi, and Koh Samui? Can anyone recommend routes/travel methods/itineraries for maneuvering through this area? Thanks, I appreciate it!

Re: Andaman Coast
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 2:02 PMfly into Phuket, take a limo to the yacht harbout, chater a yacht to take you round the andaman islands, like phi phi and lanta and many others, than stop in Krabi, have a good look around, than charter a helicopter to take you over to samui (in the golf of Siam on the opposite site of the country) . it will take no more than a few days and a few thousand dollars for an experiance of a lifetime.

www.aircharterthailand.com/
on the other hand you could do the same trip with buses and trains, longboats and ferries and TIME.
do your homework. -

Sun, January 18, 2009 - 7:30 AMThanks, and I'm also wondering where people's favorite places/beaches to stay at on Koh Samui are. -

Re: Andaman Coast
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 12:48 PMChaweng Beach is where most travellers end up, tons of hostels and resorts, lots of danceclubs and miles and miles of great beach, but it is worth to explore the rest of the island which is quieter and still has lots of other nice beaches. Transport on Samui tends to be on the expensive side, so it might be wise to hire a scooter, prices in Samui generally are higher then the rest of Thailand.

Re: Andaman Coast
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 7:18 PMi have no first-hand experience on that side of thailand, but from what i've been told, the place to go is koh lanta. i've also heard good things about krabi, and there's also a very small island called koh chang near ranong with no power that i'm told is a real paradise.
and from a look at your profile, i feel very safe in suggesting you forget samui. not only is it not on the andaman coast, so it adds a lot of travel time, it's a very fast-growing tourist island with new condos all over the place, and there are waaay too many men who've come looking for thai bargirls than i can stomach. the traffic is getting heavy and prices are going up, too. the best thing about samui is its great airport, which is close to the ferries that will take you to koh phangan, in my opinion.
if you feel a need to see that side, i lived on koh phangan for a year, which i think would be much more your style (away from haad rin, the party town), and koh tao would also be interesting. but samui? no thanks.
if you only have a few days, it seems easier to stick to the andaman side and give yourself some relaxation time.
though if money is no object, arco sure has some ideas. i definitely agree that you should fly into to phuket, rather than wasting time traveling overland from bkk, -- but arco, i'm curious what it costs to charter these limos, boats and helicopters. i can definitely appreciate the time savings and convenience, but a few thousand dollars for a few days? a few thousand bucks would last me for months!
and a word of caution about motorbikes: if you are not an experienced rider, or even if you are, it can be dangerous riding bikes in many places. i have seen more people than i can count ruin their holiday with a motorbike accident, or a bad burn on an exhaust pipe. please be uber-carefulif you choose to rent a bike, vanessa. -

Sun, January 18, 2009 - 7:35 PMThank you so much Leslie, your input really helps with my decision making. And I think I'll stay away from the bikes, seeing as the last time I rented a moped I didn't make it past the driveway without crashing into the bushes! -

Re: Andaman Coast
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 3:30 PMdefinitely nix on the bike then ;^) -- i tried learning several times when i lived on koh phangan, but realized that the learning curve was going to take a while, and it wasn't safe for me or for others on the road in the meantime. i might try again when i move to chiang rai, but for now, we're all better off if i'm not on a bike ;^)
have a fantastic trip!

Re: Andaman Coast
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 12:46 PMlol my travel sugestions where ment to be a tad sarcastic. After living in Phuket and Thailand for many years I tend to get a bit uptight when people ask how then can experience a large part of a country on a shoestring in a very short time. The Andaman sea around Phuket and Krabi is probably one of the greatest places on earth, but the only way to see it is with time and travelling on a budget means lots of patience and time, but it is probably the most rewarding way to go. Kho Lanta is nice, but again not easy to get to, probably about 5 hours via boat of bus from Krabi. I agree, stay away from motorbikes, public buses are great and dirt cheap, but a bit hard to work out where they going and timetables are never met. If in Phuket stay clear of the TucTuc Mafia (especially in Patong, there only goal in life seems to be fleecing tourists), motor cycle taxis or metered taxis are OK. I think your best bet would be to base yourself in Phuket Town and take ferries to island hop around the Bay of Phangnah and see them amazing islands, visit Phi Phi, Kho Yao and end up in Krabi then make your way back to Phuket with a bus. This way you will see lots of beautiful country and you will have an enjoyable few days meeting the locals.
I am now walking down to the sea gypsy village near my home in Rawai(Phuket) and buy myself some fresh snapper, which I than take to an old lady with a diner at the beach nearby. She will cook the fish for me and serve it with some rice and a salad, total cost, including the fish and a beer about $3, have fun. -

Re: Andaman Coast
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 9:34 AMI do appreciate you giving me some legitimate advice, so thank you. I didn't really take the suggestion of spending a few grand island hopping seriously but I just wanted to avoid another war of words with people on this particular tribe. Look, I'm merely someone who gets one chance every few years to spend a limited amount of time taking a big trip to a part of the world that interests me. I'm not going to Asia to traipse around carelessly or thoughtlessly. I am someone who travels with the greatest preparation and respect for the cultures of the countries which I visit. Plus, a budding career, along with all of the work involved in getting it on track, bars me from the luxury of living overseas for months at a time getting to know every nook and cranny of foreign countries. I have no idea what kind of ugly or boorish behavior you've encountered while living abroad, and maybe there's a lot more of it in Thailand (judging from the number of uptight reactions I've gotten to my travel plans). Hell, I know that when I lived in France I'd cringe to see how my fellow americans behaved when they'd tour around. I guess the lesson to be learned is - please don't make judgements until you get to know a person or situation, or at least walk in their shoes. Why become annoyed by people who are excited to go on a trip and who seek out advice from what are assumed to be fellow travelers and enlightened, worldly souls?
Isn't it simply great that we are curious about the world and that we are afforded any opportunity, whether big or small, to get out there and see the it? Something which I wish more people would do, it can only make the world a better place if we all were to obtain the wisdom gained from exposure to many different ways of life and ways of being. To me, travel is the most uplifting and positive experience to be had and I will strive to maintain that.

Re: Andaman Coast
Thu, January 22, 2009 - 12:34 PMi've spent years in thailand too... so? i mostly live in san francisco... if someone wanted to know the best things to do in a few days, would i get all snarky with them, since to really experience san francisco, you should live here? of course not.
so thanks for giving some real information to vanessa, since you're an expert in the area. i've been intending to see that side of the country, and have koh chang near ranong on my list. met a guy who lives there, off the grid, when i was stuck in taipei during the bkk airport protests, and it sounds lovely. my old haunts have gotten overbuilt, and i need a new simpler environment for my island time. -

Re: Andaman Coast
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 3:32 AMIs Koh Chang really still fairly unspoilt? I went there back in the mid 90's and it was absolutely remote - gorgeous, but I very nearly died in a songtaew accident which overshadows all the niceties!!!
I am heading over with my partner this June thanks to stupidly cheap flights from Australia, most likely want to Island hop on the Andaman sea side, as we fly in to BKK and fly out of Phuket, and want to do the overnight sleeper train which I have fond memories of - very comfortable, and you save a night's accomodation, so you achieve the twin benefit of travelling on a budget and getting a good distance during time that otherwise might have been wasted sleeping :D -

Re: Andaman Coast
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 4:07 PMthere are two Koh Changs, both are nice, the one near the Cambodian Border is now getting more and more developped, but there are still nice places there. The second little known Koh Chang is near the Myanmar border just off Ranong and is virtually unspoiled, very few tourists go there and most accomodation is fairly basic and cheap, it is really wirth a visit.

Re: Andaman Coast
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 4:29 PMIn Phang Nga bay two of the best islands that tourists have not hit yet are Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi, both are about an hour by ferry from Phuket Harbour (Chianwanich Pier) or opposite the airport Bang Rong Pier near Phuket Marina. On both islands is some good budget accomodation and very few resorts. The little traffic is slow and it is easy to get about on a rented bike. There are some hidden deserted beaches especially on Yao Yai that are a hike, but worth exploring. If you give me a joyce between that Yao's and PhiPhi, I choose Yao anytime, similar beautiful scenery, view noicy speedboats and few tourists and all this a 100bath ferry ride from busy Phuket. -

Re: Andaman Coast
Thu, March 5, 2009 - 7:01 AMI just got back from my trip and will vouch for what Arco says about Phang Nga Bay. If you can, take one of the Sea Canoe kayaking trips that go around the bay, they're really fun and you get to see some amazing scenery while staying away from the masses.
