Koh Samui Recommendations

topic posted Thu, March 15, 2007 - 3:08 PM by  homework
I'll be traveling to Koh Samui Apr 6-12. Was hoping I could get some recommendations on what area (Chewang vs. Lamai) and some hotels. I'll also be doing some diving, so if anyone has any recommendations on dive operators, that would be greatly appreciated as well.

Chaweng's great if you like partying--it's the nightlife capital of the island without much competition. Given just those two choices, I'd take Lamai, since I like it just a little quieter--I don't need a disco.

Personally I prefer Bo Phut, or Big Buddha beach, or if I feel like splurging, Laem Saet, where the Laem Set Inn has expensive but beautiful "bungalows" with ceiling fans and showers.

Thanks for the info. It looks as if a bungalo at Laem Set Inn is about 65/night. That works for me...

I'm wondering...I like to party a little bit...not crazy...but I like to be walking distance from the action. Do you still recommend Laem Set Inn, or is it far removed from nightlife?

It's pretty isolated, actually, and proud of it -- the whole southern end of the island prides itself on being the least built up area, which is not everyone's cup of tea. Laem Set Inn is probably about 10 minutes (by motor) from Lamai. You could walk it, too, but it would take a while. When I was there, my wife and I drank on the beach from our minibar.

Lamai itself might be more your style if you'd like to walk to bars, or Bo Phut (a very charming little town) if you don't mind only being able to walk to a few bars.

The only place in Samui, in my experience, where you really feel like you're in the thick of an entertainment district is Chaweng, which is very densely populated with nightspots. But Chaweng borders on sleazy for me--quite a lot of sex tourism and loads of sunburned drunks. I have nothing against sunburned drunks, of course, I just like fewer of them when I go to the beach.

I have been going to Samui on and off for 20 years, ya I know I must be old as dirt. Twenty years ago the whole island was sleepy and quiet, though Chaweng was on the rise. One of my favorite places on Lamai is the Lamai Resort. There are two places with this name on the long beach of Lamai, and this one is at the east end of the beach and is across a small bridge off the circle road. Last time I was their rooms were around $15 a night for bungalows with fans and $20 for AC. The reason I like this bungalow complex is that it is really the only complex with reasonable bungalow prices and about 15 or so BEACH FRONT bungalows. For me, there is a lot to be said for being able to sit on your front porch and gaze at the ocean. One thing to remember is that beach front means a breeze. It can be pretty darn uncomfortable in bungalows situated back from the beach. It used to be worse before 24 hour electricity, but there is never a fan on your front porch. Sitting on your porch with a fruit shake or a beer is truely heaven with a front row sea view. At times, as you can imagine they are all full, but usually a day or two hanging a row back will allow you to move up front. Just let them know you want to move up front when you check in, and check back each morning to see if anyone is leaving, because chances are they will not remember.

As for diving, almost all diving is done in the Koh Tao area, so if you are diving from Koh Samui, be prepared for long boat rides to the diving.

So, I know its a couple months later but I would any recommendations you could give....

I plan to attend the August full moon party and then hang out for a while. I will be in BKK for a week then head south, I am thinking flying into Koh Samui then boat to Haad Rin...what about places to stay? I have been highly recommended by friends to check out the Sanctuary. got any better budget suggestions? what about the best party? best food? Thanks in advance for any info :) Also if you are still on the island perhaps a meetup for lunch, a drink or yoga......are you teaching?

      Bright Blessings,
      Crystal

i would recommend booking a place in advance (now that all the resorts seem to have websites) if you are coming in within five days before the full moon -- if you're a hard-core young partier, stay in haad rin, but otherwise, stay over the hill in baan kai or baan tai. a year or so ago i stayed at the dewshore bungalows, because they had one remaining old-school funky bungalow right on the beach, which is what i like, and also a big fancy new pool (all the places are putting pools in) which is a great thing to have in the hot afternoons. there are some chill places on the northwest end too, but that's a trek to get to the full moon by taxi.

the sanctuary is pricey, and only accessible by boat. if you're into healing and cleansing and don't care about the money, give it a shot, but it means that your only transportation to and from the full moon party is by boat, which to me (having lived there for a while) is less than desirable for a return trip -- easy to miss your boat, and if the waves are high then it might leave from the other side. to me, a truck taxi is easier, since they run all night (if there are enough passengers to go). there are cheaper places near the sanctuary as well.

depending on your timing, it might be work staying in haad rin a few days for the party, then heading up to somewhere quieter, like tong nai pan or than sadet -- really, anywhere gets quieter after the party ;^)

and i'm not sure why you'll be in bkk for a week, but as someone who travels there often, that is waaaaay too long unless you absolutely have to be. last month, i was there five days and vowed i'll never stay more than 3 days again.

Leslie just said pretty much everything I was going to. Good advice. The good news is there's lots of options, the only trouble comes when you try to show up just before the party.
